With fuel prices nationwide going up and down amid the ongoing war in Iran, ABC News is launching a gas calculator to help drivers estimate the cost of filling up their tanks.

Since the war began in February, oil prices have topped $100 a barrel due to ongoing disruptions and closures of shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, the critical maritime passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman for oil and international trade.

The U.S. and Iran have signed a memorandum of understanding on a ceasefire that requires the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Negotiations on a permanent peace plan have struggled to get underway, and in recent days, a fresh round of tit-for-tat strikes has occurred between the U.S. and Iran over the strategic waterway.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average cost of regular, unleaded gas climbed to $4.50 in the week ending May 11 -- the highest it had been since mid-July 2022. The price has since fallen to as low as $3.79 in recent days.

To find out how much it costs to fill up, type in the year, make, and model of your vehicle, and the city you're filling up in to calculate the price from a quarter tank to a full tank of gas.
