President Donald Trump is defending his decision to pause some tariffs to Canada and Mexico for another month -- a notable reversal after imposing historic levies on the key U.S. trading partners earlier this week, causing markets to tumble.

On Friday, Trump signed more executive orders at the White House before he convened a first-ever cryptocurrency summit with industry leaders.

“The decision to attend the Joint Session is a personal one and we understand that members will come to different conclusions. However, it is important to have a strong, determined and dignified Democratic presence in the chamber. The House as an institution belongs to the American people, and as their representatives we will not be run off the block or bullied,” Jeffries wrote in a letter to colleagues.

Jeffries said Democrats are “encouraged” to “stand together” on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. on the East Front Capitol Steps “for an event featuring the voices of the American people.”

Senate to vote Monday on legislation barring trans athletes from participating in women's sports

The Senate will vote Monday on whether to advance the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which aims to codify President Donald Trump's executive order barring transgender athletes from participating in women's sports.

The legislation will need 60 votes to advance to debate when it comes up later Monday afternoon. It's unlikely that Democrats will provide the necessary support to advance it, but the vote could prove a politically challenging one for some vulnerable moderates.

In floor remarks Monday, Majority Leader John Thune called the vote a "time of choosing for Democrats," arguing that policies that permit transgender athletes in women's sports take away opportunities from female athletes.

The House has already passed a version of this bill. The Senate considered it as an amendment to a government funding bill last year. At the time, all Democrats opposed it, though voting to support it at that time could have risked a government shutdown.
