Trump 2nd term live updates: Trump defends tariffs, declines to comment on Ukraine aid

Trump directed his administration to "pause" military aid to Ukraine after the contentious meeting in the Oval Office on Friday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, two White House officials told ABC News.

A White House official told ABC News that Trump has been clear that he is focused on peace, adding, "We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well. We are pausing and reviewing our aid to ensure that it is contributing to a solution."

Speaker Mike Johnson said lawmakers need to be “on their best behavior” at President Donald Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday night.

“We ought to maintain decorum. It’s an important event for the country and everybody needs to be on their best behavior. So, I am praying that’s true,” he said as he walked into the speaker’s office.

Despite Trump’s targeting of transgender people and an anti-equality majority in the Senate, lawmakers refused to move the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act forward, with Democrats voting in unison to block it from advancing during a floor vote Monday night.

The bill failed by a vote of 51-45. It would have needed 60 votes to progress.

All Democrats present voted to stop the bill from moving forward.

In a statement, the Human Rights Campaign said, "The Senate’s rejection of this anti-LGBTQ+ attack sends a clear message that attempts to legislate away freedoms for LGBTQ+ people and their families will be met with resistance."

WWE co-founder Linda McMahon was confirmed as U.S. secretary of education Monday evening by a party-line vote of 51-45. Two Republican and two Democratic senators weren’t present for the vote.

The Trump loyalist and donor, who previously served as the head of the Small Business Administration during his first term, will be tasked with shutting down the federal agency she was confirmed to lead.
