Trump admin live updates: Trump says Musk will 'pay the consequences' if he funds Democrats

As the Senate weighs possible changes to the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap as part of the tax portion of the "big, beautiful bill," House Republicans from blue states are already threatening to derail the bill's prospects.

"Let's be clear — no SALT, no deal," New York Republican Mike Lawler said Wednesday in a post on X.

New York Rep. Nick LaLota was on the same page, posting on X: "No SALT. No Deal. For Real."

The House-passed bill raises the deduction limit of state and local taxes from federal income tax filing from $10,000 to $40,000 for joint filers making less than $500,000 per year. The cap increases then by 1% every year thereafter.

Thune signaled changes could be coming to the SALT deal that was struck in the House but the details are still unclear.

"It would be very, very hard to get the Senate to vote for what the House did," Thune told reporters. "We've just got some people that feel really strongly on this."

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer took aim at the Republican spending bill at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon where he spoke in front of posters calling the funding bill "Well, We're All Going to Die Act," citing Sen. Joni Ernst's controversial comments from last week.

The CBO report found that 10.9 million Americans would be uninsured by 2034 because of the bill.

"This is health care across the board," Schumer said.

Schumer noted that Ernst's comments, "summed up" the entire Republican stance on the bill.

"This is an across-the-board disaster for the American people," Schumer claimed.

The "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" could add $2.4 trillion to the deficit over the next decade, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

The CBO released new estimates on the legislation on Wednesday as focus turns to the Senate, where a handful of Republican members are expressing concerns about the deficit and changes to Medicaid.

The budget office is projecting 10.9 million more people will be uninsured in 2034 because of changes to health care.

Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters Wednesday morning that he had nothing but respect and praise for Elon Musk for his work "reducing waste, fraud and abuse," and said he has talked to Musk about his criticisms of the big, beautiful bill.

"We've laughed about our difference on policy before," he said. "I'm not upset about this."

Johnson however said Musk was "flat wrong" about his criticisms on the spending bill and its effect on the deficit. The speaker said that Trump was also upset with Musk's scathing appraisal of the bill,

"He's not delighted that Elon did a 180 on that," Johnson said of Trump.

Johson said he called Musk last night, but he didn't answer.

"I hope to talk to him today," Johnson said.
