Judge restricts Trump immigration raids in Los Angeles, other California counties

A federal judge on Friday temporarily barred the Trump administration from conducting broad, untargeted immigration stops and arrests in parts of California.

The temporary restraining order blocks the Department of Homeland Security from making arrests of people based solely on factors like race, accent, the type of work they do and their presence at a particular location -- such as day laborer pick up sites and agricultural sites.

The order comes after a lawsuit filed by immigrant advocacy groups accused federal agents of targeting Latino communities with unconstitutional tactics — including warrantless arrests, racial profiling and denying access to legal counsel.

Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong, a Biden appointee, sided with the ACLU of Southern California and other groups who filed the lawsuit, finding that "roving patrols" without reasonable suspicion are unconstitutional.

"What the federal government would have this Court believe —in the face of a mountain of evidence presented in this case—is that none of this is actually happening," Frimpong wrote.

Notably, the judge’s decision applies to several counties including Los Angeles and Ventura, where an immigration enforcement operation at a cannabis farm turned violent when protesters clashed with agents.

The judge will hold a hearing on the case in the coming days.

Trump grants ICE ‘total authorization’ to arrest anyone attacking agents

Referencing clashes between federal agents and protesters during recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids, President Donald Trump said he's directed Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and border czar Tom Homan to authorize ICE and other law enforcement officers to arrest anyone they believe is assaulting them.

In a new social media post, Trump said he is giving "total authorization" that allows officers to protect themselves and to detain alleged offenders immediately.

"I am on my way back from Texas, and watched in disbelief as THUGS were violently throwing rocks and bricks at ICE Officers while they were moving down a roadway in their car and/or official vehicle," Trump said in the post. " Tremendous damage was done to these brand new vehicles."

The post went on to say: "I never want to see a car carrying a Law Enforcement Officer attacked again! AUTHORIZATION IMMEDIATELY GRANTED FOR ARREST AND INCARCERATION."

Trump didn't specify which incident he was referring to in his post. In California on Thursday, federal agents clashed with protesters during a raid at what the Department of Homeland Security said was a marijuana farm.

Trump defends flood response, dismisses questions about alerts

President Donald Trump was asked by one reporter about those who say the warning alerts didn't go out in time and that more people could have been saved.

"Well, I think everyone did an incredible job under the circumstances," Trump said. "I just have admiration for the job that everybody did. There's just admiration."

Trump went on to criticize the reporter for asking the question. "Only an evil person would ask a question like that," he said.

"I think this has been heroism. This has been incredible, really, the job you've all done," Trump said. "It's easy to sit back and say, 'Oh, what could have happened here or there, maybe we could have done something differently.' This was a thing that's never happened before."

Trump went on to thank first responders who jumped in to respond immediately and those who are assisting in the search for those still missing.

"The people that are doing it are unbelievable people that you couldn't get better people than this," Trump said.
