Trump admin updates: Trump plans to issue executive order to require voter ID

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Thursday said President Donald Trump "fired" Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Susan Monarez and that her replacement will be announced "soon."

"What I will say about this individual is that her lawyers' statement made it abundantly clear themselves that she was not aligned with the president's mission to make America healthy again," Leavitt said. "And the secretary asked her to resign. She said she would, and then she said she wouldn't. So the president fired her, which he has every right to do."

"It was President Trump who was overwhelmingly reelected on Nov. 5. This woman has never received a vote in her life. And the president has the authority to fire those who are not aligned with his mission. A new replacement will be announced by either the president or the secretary very soon," Leavitt said.

Lawyers for Monarez said on Wednesday evening that she wouldn't leave her post as the top public health official, and argued that because she was appointed by Trump to the post that Trump personally had to dismiss her.

Trump has not weighed in himself on the dispute.

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will testify before the Senate Finance Committee next week, two aides confirmed to ABC News. It is scheduled to focus on "The President's 2026 Health Care Agenda."

It's unclear if the hearing was in the works before the recent staffing shakeups at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but Democrats on the panel are likely to focus their questions on the White House's recent efforts to oust CDC Director Susan Monarez and other high-profile departures at the agency.

The hearing will come as a number of Democrats are calling for Kennedy's resignation.

The Senate returns to Washington from its monthlong August recess on Tuesday. The Senate Finance Committee hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m. ET.

Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook on Thursday sued President Donald Trump over his attempt to fire her from the Board of Governors, challenging the effort and asking a judge to block it.

The suit, filed in the D.C. district court, also names Chairman Jerome Powell, and the Board of Governors as defendants.

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. would not comment Thursday on the situation over CDC Director Susan Monarez's job but said that President Donald Trump has "ambitious hopes" for the CDC, signaling the president's alignment with him.

"I will say is President Trump has very, very ambitious hopes for what for the CDC right now. CDC has problems," Kennedy said in a "Fox and Friends" interview, before he made unproven claims about the pandemic.

Kennedy, who has no formal medical training or experience, also said that the priorities of the CDC need to be reexamined.

"If there's really a deeply, deeply embedded, I would say, malaise at the agency, and we need strong leadership that will go in there, and that will be able to execute on President Trump's broad ambitions," he said.
