A homicide investigation is underway after a 67-year-old woman was found dead in a suitcase at a Kansas fire station, police said.

The investigation began Wednesday evening when two people went to Wichita Fire Station 22 with a suitcase, saying a body was inside, the Wichita Police Department said.

The body has been taken to the local medical examiner's office, police said. Authorities believe they know the woman's identity and said she'd been reported missing, but police added that they're awaiting confirmation before releasing her name.

Police said they're interviewing the two people who brought the suitcase to the fire station and are "working to determine how the woman and the individuals being interviewed are connected to one another."

Police have not announced any arrests but said there's no apparent threat to the public.

Investigators are "working to establish a timeline, identify additional locations connected to the case and locate additional witnesses," police said in a statement.
