Mamdani celebrates victory in 'reborn' New York City
Mamdani urged the city to "breathe this moment in."
Democrats triumphed in high-profile races that unfolded across the country on Tuesday, including New York City's mayoral election and governor's races in New Jersey and Virginia.
In California, voters also chose to redraw their state's congressional map in a move that could net Democrats five House seats.
The elections help provide a picture of how Americans feel about President Donald Trump's first nine months in office. Following a wave of Republican losses, Trump tried to blame the election results on his not being on the ballot and the prolonged government shutdown.

Democratic Governors Association praises Spanberger win
Democratic Governors Association Chair Kansas Governor Laura Kelly released a statement congratulating Abigail Spanberger's victory in the Virginia governor's race.
"Abigail won by building support from voters across party lines because she stayed relentlessly focused on her positive plans to lower costs and her commitment to putting service ahead of politics," she said.
“Tonight’s results are also a resounding rejection of Donald Trump’s chaos and a warning sign to all Republican politicians running in 2026 who continue to rubber stamp his failed economic policies," she added.

Spanberger to make history as Virginia's first female governor
Democrat Abigail Spanberger is projected to win Virginia's governor race against Republican Winsome Earle-Sears by 10 points: 55%-44%.
That will make Spanberger, who has maintained a consistent lead in the polls throughout the race, Virginia’s first female governor.
The results of the Virginia gubernatorial election -- which comes during an election off-year -- is often viewed as a political bellwether for competitive races in the midterms the following year.
The governor's race is of particular interest this year because Virginia is home to more than 300,000 federal workers, many of whom were likely affected by efforts made by the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency to slash the federal workforce and the current government shutdown that has no end in sight.
According to preliminary ABC News exit poll data, about half of Virginia voters said that the economy was the most important issue facing the commonwealth, and most Virginia voters said federal government cuts are affecting their finances.
Spanberger's win may be seen as a referendum on President Donald Trump's second term in a state that he lost three times by considerable margins.
